Mr Obed Giles was many years the handy man of the district, his work included Kaiapoi and further afield in other areas. He was available to sink a well or to build a shed. To brick in a wash-boiler or to do a job of engineering was no trouble to him. Probably there are still many of his constructions functioning in Clarkville and surrounding districts. He played the fiddle for dances held in the old school before the Peace Hall was built. Mr Giles had one hobby in which he excelled - fishing for herrings.

A few months in the year the herrings make their way upstream to enter the Cam and other tributaries of the North Branch of the Waimakariri, and our friend Obed had a most uncanny knowledge of their comings and goings. When Mr Giles rolled up his line it was useless for any others to continue fishing. How he knew that the herrings had left - the fish were not visible in the deep water which they favoured - remains a mystery.
